About this tool

Enter your average hours worked from home each week, the weeks you worked from home and your taxable income. The calculator applies the fixed rate method (70 cents per hour), compares it with your actual costs if you enter them, and shows the tax saved.

Fixed rate method

The ATO's fixed rate is 70 cents for each hour you work from home in 2024-25 and 2025-26. It covers electricity and gas, internet, mobile and home phone usage, and stationery and computer consumables. You must keep a record of every hour, such as a timesheet or roster, for the whole year.

Actual cost method

If your real costs are higher you can claim them instead, but you need receipts and a calculation of the work share of each cost. Enter the total of the actual costs to compare.

Tax saved

The saving is the deduction times your marginal rate (resident rates for 2025-26: 16% above $18,200, 30% above $45,000, 37% above $135,000, 45% above $190,000) plus the 2% Medicare levy. Equipment such as a desk or computer can be claimed separately.

Worked example

20 hours a week for 46 weeks is 920 hours, a deduction of $644 at 70 cents an hour. At a 30% marginal rate plus 2% Medicare levy it saves about $206 in tax.

Tips for best results

Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.
