About this tool
In most cases a person must apply for asylum within one year of their last arrival in the United States. Missing the deadline can bar the application unless an exception applies. This calculator takes the date of your last arrival, finds the last day to file, moves it to the next business day if it falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, counts the days left and prepares reminder dates. It is a date tool for planning, not legal advice or a statement of whether you are eligible.
Who this is for People who recently arrived and want to know how much time they have, relatives who help them organize documents, and volunteers at community organizations who prepare calendars for clients. Because deadlines can have serious consequences, it is meant to be used alongside advice from an immigration attorney or an accredited representative.
How the deadline is counted The one-year period starts at the date of the last arrival, as shown on the I-94 record, and the last day to file is the day before the one-year anniversary. If that day is a Saturday, Sunday or a federal holiday, the filing is generally due on the next business day. The tool applies that rule and shows both dates so you can see the effect.
Reminder dates The page lists the dates 60, 30 and 7 days before the last day. It is wise to aim to file well before the deadline, since gathering documents, translations and statements takes time. A warning appears when fewer than 60 days remain, or when the date has passed.
Exceptions The law allows exceptions for changed circumstances, such as a change in conditions in the home country or in the person's situation, and for extraordinary circumstances, such as serious illness or legal disability, if the person applies within a reasonable time. Minors who arrived alone have special rules. The calculator does not decide whether an exception applies.
Worked example Arrival on March 18, 2026 means the last day to file is March 17, 2027, a Wednesday. Arrival on May 2, 2026 leads to an anniversary of May 2, 2027, so the last day is May 1, 2027, which is a Saturday, and the deadline moves to Monday, May 3, 2027.
Limits Dates on your I-94 and your immigration history matter, and a lawyer can tell you whether a different deadline applies. Do not rely on this tool alone for a legal deadline.
Worked example
Arrival on March 18, 2026 gives a last filing day of March 17, 2027; an arrival on May 2, 2026 gives May 3, 2027 because May 1 is a Saturday.
